Last Monday we officially published Achten Tan. It was a big day for me -- I was officially publishing my first ever anthology with the title "Editor-In-Chief," and it was my first time "really" publishing anything, I mean with an officially purchased ISBN so the book would be available for full distribution. I was expecting to feel good about that. But what I wasn't expecting when I started Tales From the Year Between was that the most rewarding part would be watching OTHER people be proud of their work.
I'd ordered copies last week, and over the last few days they've been showing up at author's doorsteps. And because most of us met on Twitter, they've been tweeting about the arrivals -- sending out pictures and videos of themselves holding their new book, opening the Amazon envelope or box, grinning next to the cover, zooming in on the table of contents listing their name and story title.
I never intended to be a publisher. And honestly, when I started this, I didn't think of myself as being a publisher. I was just a guy who liked to write who'd put two books on KDP and now was going to ask some strangers to join him on a crazy project. But now we have a book -- a REAL book, with an awesome cover and killer maps and appendices and everything. And there are other writers out there holding it in their hands, knowing their stories are in there. I'm happy my name's on the cover, but I'm happier knowing it's making other people happier.
Huh. Maybe I AM a publisher?
